The Best Muscle Building Diet Plan To Build Muscle Fast & For FREEIf you’re reading this, it means your primary goal is building muscle. I don’t care if you want to build 5lbs of muscle or 5. I don’t care if you’re male or female, young or old. If you want to know how to build muscle as effectively as possible, and put together the absolute best diet plan to make it happen. For women, it’s 1. The ideal caloric surplus will cause you to gain weight at the ideal rate. For men, that ideal weight gain rate is about 0. For women, it’s about 0. Weigh yourself at least once per week first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and keep track of your weight (or, weigh in every morning and take the weekly average). If it’s increasing at the ideal rate, you’re perfect. If it isn’t, adjust your daily calorie intake up or down until it is. Protein. The ideal daily protein intake for men with the primary goal of building muscle is 0. For women with the primary goal of building muscle, it’s 0. ![]() This protein intake should typically come mostly from high quality whole food sources (chicken, meat, fish, etc.) and if needed or preferred, protein powder. Fat. The ideal daily fat intake is between 2. This fat intake should primarily come from monounsaturated and polyunsaturated sources (nuts, olive oil, fish/fish oil, etc.). Saturated fat should account for no more than 1/3 of your total fat intake, and trans fat should be avoided completely. An added emphasis should be placed on getting a sufficient amount of your essential fatty acids, specifically omega- 3 (which is easiest to get by taking a fish oil supplement). Carbs. The ideal daily carb intake is simply whatever is left after an ideal protein and fat intake have been factored in. The majority of this carb intake should typically come from unprocessed nutrient- rich sources (rice, potatoes, vegetables, fruits, oats, whole grains, etc.). Highly refined junk should be limited to some extent. Enjoyability And Sustainability. Once you’ve set your total calorie and nutrient intake to their ideal levels, the key is putting your entire diet together in whatever way will make you most likely to stick to it consistently. Meal frequency and timing doesn’t matter (PRE/POST workout meals are the only exception). So if you’d rather eat 3 meals per day, go for it. If you’d rather eat 6 meals per day, go for it. If you’d rather eat early instead of late or late instead of early, do it. ![]() In the end, all that matters is what you eat and how much you eat. Do whatever is most enjoyable, convenient and sustainable for you. Choose foods and adjust your diet based on your own personal preferences and needs. As long as you get your calorie and nutrient totals right for the day (and get them from mostly high quality sources as opposed to processed useless junk), everything else is just a minor detail that should be put together based on what’s best and most all around preferable for you. PRE & POST Workout Nutrition. Surround your weight training workouts with meals that contain a good amount of protein and carbs. For your PRE workout meal, either consume a normal solid food meal 1- 2 hours before your workout, or consume a fast, easily digested liquid meal/shake 0- 3. For your POST workout meal, either consume a normal solid food meal or a liquid meal/shake as soon after your workout as possible (ideally within the first 3. Supplements. In other cases however, some people don’t care what that weight is. Muscle, fat, or a combination of both. ![]() Let’s begin. Like I said before, I know this first hand. However, I’ve still managed to gain weight just fine. Well, all it takes are 3 simple steps. Simple, isn’t it? All we need to do now is get each step just right. How about a weight gain diet for a 100 lb woman? ![]() That’s honestly all it takes, and that’s honestly the one true requirement of a weight gain diet. Which means, if you’re not gaining weight now (or in the future), the problem 1. Simple as that. How Many Calories Should I Eat Per Day? This brings us to the most important question of all. In order to gain weight, you need to eat MORE calories than this amount. How much more? Well, in most cases, you should eat 3. Since most people want the weight they gain to be muscle and NOT fat, this is the ideal amount of calories that I would recommend. Any less and you won’t be gaining anything. Any more and you’ll end up gaining way more fat than muscle. So, whatever maintenance level the calculator estimated for you, just add 3. For example, if your estimated maintenance level was 2. If your calorie intake is indeed accurate, you should end up gaining between 0. To make sure this is happening correctly, weigh yourself at least once per week (always first thing in the morning on an empty stomach) and make sure weight gain is taking place as fast as it should be. If it is, then you’re perfect. If you’re gaining weight slower than you should be (or just not at all), you need to add an additional 3. If you’re gaining faster than you should be (which would mean too much fat is being gained), you need to reduce your calorie intake by 3. ![]() Whenever you end up gaining weight in that ideal range of 0. Keep eating that amount of calories. Now, while most men and women who want to gain weight want that weight to be muscle instead of fat, there are some people who just want to know how to gain weight of any kind as fast as they can (even if it is fat). In these rarer cases when you don’t care if you gain fat, muscle or both, a more aggressive weight gain diet can be used. Specifically, eat 5. However, since most of us want to avoid gaining fat and only gain lean muscle instead, 3. I’d recommend for most people. Step 2: The Rest Of Your Weight Gain Diet. Now that your calorie intake is all figured out, you already know the big secret of how to gain weight. Simple as that. That’s literally the one and only thing you need to do. Of course, you probably still have a bunch of questions about the rest of your weight gain diet. Let’s quickly cover them all right now. Specifically, eat between 0. So, if you weigh 1. Common high protein foods include chicken, fish, turkey, meat, eggs and of course protein supplements. ![]() ![]() Skinny beginners will gain muscle mass fast naturally every 2 weeks without steroids using free workout & mass gaining diet plan.Eat enough fat, especially the essential fatty acids. About 2. 5- 3. 0% of your calorie intake should come from fat, with the majority of it coming from healthy sources like fish, nuts and olive oil. Even more importantly, make sure are getting enough of the Omega- 3 fatty acid found mostly in fish oil supplements. Get the rest of your calories from carbs. After you’re getting enough protein and fat, the rest of your diet will be comprised of carbs. The majority of your carb intake should come from natural, nutrient- rich foods like fruits and vegetables, brown rice, beans, potatoes, and most whole wheat/whole grain products. Of course, since weight gain is your goal, foods like white rice and pasta can be eaten as needed to reach your ideal calorie intake. Don’t waste your money on useless supplements. No matter what they claim, 9. The only supplements that I’d recommend are protein powder, fish oil, multivitamin and creatine. Eat a proper post workout meal. How you organize the meals in your weight gain diet is entirely up to your own preferences. However, the one important tip worth mentioning is to eat a proper post workout meal. I explain how to do that here: Post Workout Meal Step 3: A Proper Workout Routine. While a proper weight gain diet (specifically eating enough calories) is the only real requirement for how to gain weight, there is a second requirement that exists if you want to make sure the weight you gain is muscle and NOT just fat. I’m of course talking about a proper weight training workout routine. In order to get the best muscle building results possible, you MUST combine the type of weight gain diet I just explained with a workout routine that is designed specifically for building muscle quickly and effectively. If you don’t, you’ll just gain fat. If you don’t mind just gaining fat, then feel free to use the diet by itself without a workout routine. But if you want to build muscle and not just get fat, a proper workout routine is REQUIRED. So, what is a proper muscle building workout routine? This book advises that the key to weight loss is avoiding and overcoming food intolerance – food intolerances stress your system and give you negative symptoms including weight gain. Some people’s bodies simply have difficulty tolerating certain foods, such as gluten, lactose, or MSG. Usually, this is because the intolerant people are lacking a specific chemical or enzyme that they need to digest the food. This is simply a genetic problem, and there isn’t much you can do about it except to avoid the foods. Another issue is food sensitivities, which affect at least 7. They’re a type of immune reaction, but they mobilize a different type of antibody than food allergies do – not Ig. E, but immunoglobulin G, or Ig. G. The symptoms don’t appear until hours or days after you’ve eaten, and if you continue to eat the offending foods, food sensitivities keep your immune system fired up on a chronic basis. This diet has 3 stages: Cycle 1 – elimination – 2. FI (food intolerance) foods; eat healing foods and healing supplements. Cycle 2 – reintroduction – 2. FI food. Based on your responses, determine whether each food should stay or go. Cycle 3 – lifetime – avoid corn, peanuts, and sugar and artificial sweeteners 9. The hormone insulin stimulates body tissues to absorb blood sugar, and then burn it for fuel or store it for later use. Insulin resistance is a condition in which the body gradually loses its ability to use insulin effectively. ![]() To compensate, excess amounts of insulin are produced and released into the bloodstream. Insulin resistance is the primary metabolic abnormality that leads to pre- diabetes and type 2 diabetes (T2. DM). Certain nutritional supplements - - such as chromium, alpha- lipoic acid, omega- 3 fatty acids, zinc and magnesium - - might help reduce insulin resistance, leading to more efficient use of insulin. Chromium is a trace mineral the body requires to process fats and carbohydrates. It works through complex mechanisms to boost the effectiveness of insulin in body tissue. A March 2. 01. 4 . Like other antioxidants, ALA neutralizes potentially harmful substances called free radicals. An overabundance of free radicals, known as oxidative stress, is thought to be a factor in the development and progression of diabetes and its associated complications. Some research suggests that oxidative stress may also contribute to insulin resistance. This has led to interest in using supplemental ALA as a possible way to counteract insulin resistance. Although the effectiveness of oral ALA remains to be conclusively proven, a small eight- week study reported in the June 2. The authors noted their findings were consistent with animal and laboratory experiments, and at least two other small studies on humans. While these results are promising, additional research is needed to confirm whether oral ALA is beneficial for people with diabetes. Magnesium is an essential nutrient that has crucial roles in insulin secretion and metabolism of blood glucose. Low magnesium levels are common in people with T2. DM, because of decreased intake and increased loss through the urine. Magnesium plays a complex role in enabling insulin usage, and insufficient magnesium may be a contributing factor to insulin resistance. The relationship of magnesium to insulin resistance was examined in a study published in the October 2. The researchers found that those who had the largest dietary intake of magnesium were 7. Another study published in April 2. Zinc deficiency is associated with insulin resistance and increased blood sugar. Zinc works both independently and in combination with insulin to enhance glucose absorption from the bloodstream into the cells of the body. Medication called metformin (Glucophage, Fortamet, Glumetza) is also sometimes prescribed. Other medications are often used for people with T2. DM. The potential role of nutritional supplements for insulin resistance treatment is still being investigated. As of 2. 01. 6, the American Diabetes Association does not recommend nutritional supplements for treatment of pre- diabetes or T2. DM. Many people, however, opt to use supplements as part of their treatment plan. If you're interested in adding supplements to your regimen, talk with your healthcare provider. This is important because supplements can interact with medications, including diabetes medications. Some nutritional supplements might also cause potentially dangerous side effects. Regular blood sugar monitoring is essential if you're taking supplements along with diabetes medications. Adjustments in diabetes medication dosages might be necessary, but you should never stop taking your medicines or change the dosages unless your doctor instructs you to do so. Be sure to ask about it before you get started!”Another stated, “I never thought losing weight would be so expensive.”Some HMR Diet reviews didn’t mention the cost of the eating plan.“It may seem expensive, but the results justify the price tag,” said a dieter. Scroll below for one of the best products we’ve seen over the last year. Negative Dieter Reviews – “Not Good”According to customer reviews, HMR Diet side effects and lack of results were concerning. One customer said, “I decided to stop because of side effects. I believe this is due to the aspartame in the shakes.”Another dieter said, “If you are on the at home program and you ask them to put your order delivery on hold for a couple weeks they will drop you from your weekly meetings.”On the other hand, we found several HMR Diet reviews that were positive.“The food is quite good and after you get over the initial hurdle of adjustment (as with any diet), you are on your way to success,” said a customer. Therefore, if the HMR Diet does in fact cause a lot of undesirable experiences, this could be very problematic. Does Science Support This One? ![]() It’s no big secret that reducing your daily calorie intake can lead to weight- loss. Therefore the HMR Diet can likely work for some people. We at Diet. Spotlight must see documented scientific studies that support the plan or product and how it encourages increased loss. When it comes to losing weight, one simple piece of advice may be more helpful than all the diet books, calorie counting, and portion measuring put together: Eat more. Weight Watchers is an effective diet. Among its pros: An emphasis on group support, lots of fruits and veggies, and room for occasional indulgences. Unfortunately we did not find that with this program. We are excited about this program and the fact that professional assistance is provided. However, we are hesitant recommending the HMR Diet because it is just so expensive. You should also be aware that clinic locations may not be available in your area. Furthermore, we found quite a few customer complaints regarding the supplements used for this plan. If you find one that’s backed by positive customer reviews that’s even better. Among the best products we’ve seen this year is one called Dietspotlight Burn. The formula is a unique combination of four ingredients that have been proven in published clinical studies to help boost overall fat loss and speed up metabolism. Moreover, we can’t find any discussion of adverse side effects and user reviews posted online reveal people are seeing great results. To boot, the makers of Dietspotlight Burn are confident in their product so they’re offering a Special Trial Offer, quite a positive for dieters. The HMR Diet, or Weight Management System, offers three choices - Decision- Free, Healthy- Solutions and Healthy- Shakes. The latter two can be done at home, but the first is only available in clinics. You can order everything you need from the official website and nutritional information is available, but no ingredient lists to speak of. HMR Diet Ingredients and Supplement Facts. Amount per Serving% DVMeal Replacement Shakes**Protein- Rich Entrees**Multigrain Hot Cereal**Chocolate Pudding**HMR App**Recipe Book**Support Guides**Other Ingredients: None. We thoroughly examined HMR Diet ingredients to give you the facts you need. Protein. First of all, protein is necessary for the health of muscles, bones, skin, blood and cartilage. It’s made of amino acids. An average diet should include at least 5. Some excellent sources of protein include meat, eggs, cheese, fish, beans, soy, legumes, nuts and seeds. What is it Supposed to Do? Well, protein is often included in diet supplements, shakes and bars to help suppress appetite and build lean muscle mass. It also helps boost energy levels. Typically low- fat, low calorie ingredients are added to weight- loss shakes and snack foods. Clinical Research. Some research does support protein as being beneficial to weight- loss. For example, Pub. Med. gov says, “Several meta- analyses of shorter- term, tightly controlled feeding studies showed greater weight- loss, fat mass loss, and preservation of lean mass after higher- protein energy- restriction diets than after lower- protein energy- restriction diets.”Calcium. To begin, calcium is a mineral that’s essential to overall wellness. It plays a vital role in the health and maintenance of bones, teeth, nerves and even the heart. Some major sources of this nutrient include dairy products like cheese and milk, as well as vegetables such as green beans, okra and broccoli. What is it Supposed to Do? Aside from nourish the body, calcium may help with weight- loss by preventing new weight gain and enhancing fat loss. This is why it’s added to many diet supplements and fitness shakes. Clinical Research. Unfortunately some research does not support calcium as an effective weight- loss aid. One study posted in NCBI. Analysis as separate trials found no significant differences between the placebo and the calcium groups. Calcium supplementation did not significantly affect amount of weight or fat lost by women counseled to follow a moderately restricted diet for 2. Nevertheless, the magnitude and direction of the differences for group means are consistent with a hypothesized small effect.”Soy. There are plant proteins that are often used as alternatives to animal products. One of them is soy. You will find this ingredient in all kinds of supplement powders, shakes and bars. It’s free of bad fats and it’s low in calories, which can help with weight- loss. What is it Supposed to Do? First off, soy foods are often rich in fiber, omega- 3 fatty acids, B vitamins and calcium. This is great for overall health. However, supplements that contain this ingredient may only provide protein from soy. Basically, this substance is intended to aid with weight reduction because it’s low in carbohydrates and calories. When consumed in place of animal sources, it may help you shed some pounds. Clinical Research. There is some research that links the lean protein in soy to weight reduction. For example, “Dr. David Allison and Dr. Mark Cope at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Dr. John Erdman at the University of Illinois at Champagne- Urbana conducted an evidence- based review of studies on soy and obesity. The researchers found that soy foods are equal to other protein sources, such as dairy or meat, in helping to battle weight by promoting fat loss.”HMR Diet Questions & Answers: We refined hundreds of user comments about HMR Diet into this helpful FAQ. What You Should Know. The HMR Diet, otherwise known as the Health Management Resources Diet, is a modified form of the VLCD diet. It combines partial liquid fasting with low calorie meals and snacks for a complete diet plan, which they recommend for patients who need to lose over 4. HMR has over 4. 0 clinics in the U. S. Unlike Beyond Diet it is not a singular book but a series of steps. A Definite 'Go' When It Comes to Dieting. When it comes to losing weight, one simple piece of advice may be more helpful than all the diet books, calorie counting, and portion measuring put together: Eat more fiber. A recent study found that people who added more of it to their diets - - without changing anything else - - lost almost as much weight as people who followed the heart- healthy, low- fat eating plan recommended by the American Heart Association. The study added to a growing body of evidence that people who eat more fiber tend to have a healthier body weight. While high- fiber foods tend to be healthy (think: fruit, veggies, whole grains), what proved equally important was that this kind of diet was easier to stick to than the other, more structured approach. What Is Fiber? It's a carbohydrate found in plant foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Unlike other carbs, it isn’t easily digested by your body, so it passes quickly through your system without causing your blood sugar to rise. All fruits and vegetables have fiber, but it’s mostly concentrated in the skin, seeds, and membranes. That means an apple with the skin on has more fiber than a peeled banana. Some of the richest fruit sources of it are whole berries like raspberries and strawberries, says Tracie Jackson, RD, a nutrition therapist with the University of Nebraska Medical Center.? Women under 5. 0 years old should aim to get 2. Some experts recommend even more. Americans get only about half that, which means we're missing out not only on the weight benefit, but also a lower risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. How Does It Help With Weight Loss? Fiber has no magical fat- burning properties. It simply helps you feel full without adding a lot of extra calories to your diet. When you have a baked potato (with skin) instead of a bag of potato chips, for example, you’re not only eating fewer calories - - you’re less likely to feel hungry again an hour later. Continued. Simple: It fills your stomach, stimulating receptors that tell your brain that it’s time to stop eating. You'll also need to drink plenty of H2. Lower blood sugar levels mean lower insulin levels - - and that means your body is less likely to store fat. What About Supplements? It's best to get your fill of fiber from food rather than from supplements. Experts aren't totally sure whether fiber on its own offers the same perks as when it’s combined with other food compounds. Low- FODMAP Diet for IBSGot digestion problems like irritable bowel syndrome, bloating, or gas? They are a type of carb. But this is not your typical low- carb diet. The diet only limits carbs that are . But some people are sensitive to them. FODMAPs draw water into your digestive tract, which could make you bloated. If you eat too much of them, they can hang around in your gut and ferment. These types of carbs are FODMAPs: Fructose: Fruits, honey, high- fructose corn syrup, agave. Lactose: Dairy. Fructans: Wheat, onions, garlic. Galactans: Legumes, such as beans, lentils, and soybeans. ![]() Smoothies can be a great (and fun) way to consume nutritious foods for breakfast, for lunch or as a post-workout meal. Avoiding FODMAPs doesn’t help everyone. But in a study published in the journal Gastroenterology, about 3 out of 4 people with IBS had their symptoms ease right away after starting a low- FODMAP diet and felt the most relief after 7 days or more on the plan. Remember, FODMAPs aren't bad. Many foods that are rich in them encourage the growth of good bacteria in the gut. Trying a Low- FODMAP Diet. If you have gas, bloating, belly pain, diarrhea, or constipation, you might consider nixing all five forms of FODMAP carbs (lactose, fructose, fructans, sugar alcohols, and galactans) for up to 4 weeks to see if that helps. If FODMAPs are the culprit, you’ll probably start to feel better quickly. You'll have many foods you can eat on this diet, but there's a steep learning curve about which foods are high in FODMAPs and what you could choose instead. For example, these foods are high in FODMAPs: Anything made with wheat, barley, or rye. Apples. Artichokes. Things Everyone Should Know About Low- Carb Dietsistock. Last week, my staff nutritionist Laura Schoenfeld wrote a guest post for my blog called “Is a Low- Carb Diet Ruining Your Health”. Perhaps not surprisingly, it has caused quite a stir. For reasons I don’t fully understand, some people identify so strongly with how many carbohydrates they eat that they take offense when a suggestion is made that low- carb diets may not be appropriate for everyone, in all circumstances. In these circles low- carb diets have become dogma (i. Followers of this strange religious sect insist that everyone should be on low- carb or even ketogenic diets; that all carbohydrates, regardless of their source, are “toxic”; that most traditional hunter- gatherer (e. Paleolithic) societies followed a low- carb diet; and, similarly, that nutritional ketosis—which is only achievable with a very high- fat, low- carb, and low- protein diet—is our default and optimal physiological state. Cut through the confusion and hype and learn what research can tell us about low- carb diets. On the other hand, I’ve also observed somewhat of a backlash against low- carb diets occurring in the blogosphere of late. While I agree with many of the potential issues that have been raised about low- carb diets, and think it’s important to discuss them, I also feel it’s important not to lose sight of the fact that low- carb diets can be very effective therapeutic tools for certain conditions and in certain situations. With this in mind, here are 7 things I think everyone should know about low- carb diets.#1: Paleo does not equal low- carb, and very low- carb/ketogenic diets are not our “default” nutritional state, as some have claimed. Some low- carb advocates have claimed that most traditional hunter- gatherer societies consumed diets that were very low in carbohydrates. I’ve even seem some suggestions that nutritional ketosis was “the norm” for these cultures. These claims are false. The majority of studies have shown that traditional hunter- gatherer (HG) societies typically consume between 3. Yet even these cultures—such as the traditional Inuit—often made an effort to obtain carbohydrates from berries, corms, nuts, seaweed, and tubers whenever they could, as Richard Nikoley has recently detailed on his blog. What’s more, contrary to popular claims, studies have shown that it’s unlikely the Inuit spent much time—if any—in nutritional ketosis. Their high protein intake would have prevented ketosis from occurring. ![]() With virtually no historical examples of human beings following ketogenic diets for any significant length of time, and few examples of very low- carb diets, it’s difficult to imagine how these diets could be considered our “default” nutritional state or the optimal approach for most people.#2: Low- carb diets are incredibly effective in certain situations. Lest low- carb advocates think that I am anti- low- carb, I’d like to reiterate that both the research and my clinical experience suggest that low- carb diets can be incredibly effective therapeutic tools for certain conditions. These conditions include (but aren’t limited to): Overweight and obesity. High blood sugar, metabolic syndrome, diabetes (both type 1 & type 2)Traumatic brain injury. Epilepsy. Parkinson’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease. Other neurological conditions. PCOSI have personally witnessed some remarkable transformations using ketogenic diets therapeutically in my practice. I recall an 8. 4 year- old woman who came to see me complaining of dementia and early- onset Alzheimer’s. She was losing her memory and cognitive abilities at an alarming rate. After just two weeks on a ketogenic diet, this progression not only halted, it reversed: her memory returned, her mind was sharper, and she was far less confused and disoriented. Her family (and her doctor) were stunned, and could hardly believe the changes they were seeing. Yet as impressive as very low- carb (VLC) and ketogenic diets can be in certain situations, that does not mean that these diets may not have some undesirable side effects over the long term—some of which we’re only beginning to understand. For example, as I discussed with Jeff Leach from the American Gut project in a recent podcast, some preliminary research suggests that long- term ketogenic/VLC diets may cause adverse changes to the gut microbiota. The Truth about Raspberry Ketones, Green Coffee Bean Extract, and Garcinia Cambogia Although Dr. Oz uses words like "magic" and "miracle" to describe these fat-loss. It’s worth noting that many of these fibers are found in foods with moderate to high carbohydrate content—foods that would typically be excluded on very low- carb diets. It’s important to note, however, that the beneficial bacteria- starving effects of ketogenic/VLC diets can be at least partially offset by consuming non- digestible, fermentable fibers like resistant starch and non- starch polysaccharides that don’t count toward daily carbohydrate intake. This is something I recommend to all of my patients following low- carb diets)#3: The fact that ketogenic/VLC diets work therapeutically for certain conditions does not make them appropriate in all circumstances, for all people. This assumption is a basic failure of logic, but it’s remarkable to see how often it happens. A person has a life- changing experience with a VLC diet, so they assume that their friend will have a similar experience. Or a clinician that works primarily with people suffering from neurological conditions has great success with ketogenic diets, and then makes the assumption that all people (regardless of their health complaints) will benefit from them. This is akin to saying that since people with hemochromatosis (a genetic condition that causes iron overload) need to limit their iron intake, everyone should consume foods that are low in iron. The belief that “everyone” will benefit from one particular dietary approach—no matter what it is—ignores the important differences that determine what is optimal for each person. These include variations in genes, gene expression, the microbiome, health status, activity levels, geography (e. How to lose half a stone in 14 days: Menu and exercise plan Want to fit into that LBD for Christmas? Follow this simple, no-fuss menu plan by weight-loss guru. When it comes to diet, there is no one- size- fits- all approach. Some people may thrive on a long- term, low- carb diet. I have patients and even a family member in this category. And maybe you’re one of them too. But that doesn’t mean everyone will have this experience. If you talk to practicing clinicians who work with patients on a daily basis, or spend any amount of time in internet forums or the comments sections of nutrition blogs, you’ll find numerous reports from people who either experienced no benefit from or were even harmed by following a low- carb diet. What blows my mind is that the “low- carb zealots” seem completely incapable of accepting these reports at face value. Instead, they’ll argue that anyone who doesn’t succeed with low- carb is either doing it wrong, cheating, or somehow imagining their symptoms. What’s the more likely explanation here? That everyone who gets worse with a low- carb diet is either incapable of following directions, weak- willed, or delusional? Or that a low- carb diet simply does not work for everyone? You be the judge. Here’s an example: “A low- carb diet is effective for treating type 2 diabetes. Therefore, eating too many carbohydrates led to this condition in the first place.”This is like saying: Restricting iron is helpful in hemochromatosis patients. Therefore, consuming too much iron is what caused hemochromatosis in the first place. A low- FODMAP diet helps patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Therefore, eating FODMAPs caused IBS in the first place. A low- histamine diet alleviates the symptoms of histamine intolerance. Therefore, histamine intolerance is caused by eating too many histamine containing foods. Or, more ridiculously, since wearing a cast on your arm will help the broken bone heal, the reason you broke your arm in the first place is because you weren’t wearing a cast. It’s true that VLC/ketogenic diets are effective for improving the metabolic markers associated with type 2 diabetes. But that doesn’t mean that eating too many carbohydrates led to the condition in the first place. It is certainly possible (and indeed likely) that eating too many refined and processed carbohydrates, in the form of flour and sugar, contributes to diabetes. But I have not seen a single study suggesting that eating whole- food carbohydrates (e. On the contrary, reviews of prospective studies looking at the relationship between fruit intake and diabetes have found that those with the highest intake of fruit had the lowest incidence of diabetes. For example, there are numerous studies showing that low- carb and ketogenic diets can help with weight loss and metabolic problems. Studies have also shown that calorie- restricted diets, protein- sparing modified fasts, and even low- fat diets can also be effective treatments. They may be able to reverse their condition by following a high- protein, moderate- carbohydrate, moderate- fat diet (such as the Paleo diet with 3. I just mentioned. In #1 above, I referenced studies indicating that most hunter- gatherer societies consumed about 3. These carbohydrates came from starchy tubers and plants, whole fruit, and in some cases, honey. We also have evidence of specific ancestral populations—such as the Kitava, traditional Okinawans, and Tukisenta—that consumed between 7. When it comes to macronutrients, quality is much more important than quantity for most people. Final thoughts. I hope this helps to clarify some of the confusion that has surrounded this issue. Low- carb diets are an effective therapeutic tool in certain situations, and one that I (and many other clinicians) use in my clinical practice. That said, it’s equally true that low- carb—and especially VLC and ketogenic—diets are not appropriate in all circumstances, and they are certainly not our “default” or optimal nutritional state. Sadly, it doesn’t seem to matter how much scientific evidence, clinical experience, and common sense is brought to bear on this question: those who preach and follow low- carb dogma will not be swayed.
